Hello! Welcome back for another blog post~
Today’s blog post will be so different for me since it’s my first time doing a graphic novel review. We will be talking about Alice Oseman’s ‘Heartstopper’ So far, Volume 1 is the only which has been released so will be discussing about it~
Y’all don’t know how much I’m swooning for all the graphic novels I have read for the past couple of days. I’m addicted, and I have yet to read a lot of graphic novels in my collection of books!
I thought that instead of doing my usual format of doing books reviews, I’m changing the way I’m going to review a graphic novel. Of course, it would still be a non-spoilery type of review. The difference is that on graphic novels, I’ll be focusing on four aspects: plot, characters, art style, and the overall impact!
BOOK DESCRIPTION FROM GOODREADS
Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…? Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys.
The past year hasn’t been too great but at least he’s not being bullied anymore, and he’s sort of got a boyfriend, even if he’s kind of mean and only wants to meet up in secret.
Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him. That is, until the start of January, in which Nick and Charlie are placed in the same form group and made to sit together.
They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for n=Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…
From the author of Solitaire and Radio Silence comes a bind up of the first two chapters of Heartstopper, an ongoing webcomic. PLOT
Heartstopper basically follows the story of two boys, Charlie Spring, a student in Year 10 and Nick Nelson, from Year 11. Their story starts once they become seatmates in a form in their school. The plot is straight-forward and very simple. I love how this book also tackles the struggles alongside with being an individual which is a part of the LGBTQ+ community. If you want something light-hearted and soft without too much drama, then this book is for you. Although I think the plot will get more and more action-packed in the coming volumes of this book.
The main protagonist, Charlie Spring, is introverted and socially reserved because of the bullying he experienced from coming out as a gay, but despite of this, deep inside he’s still a hopeless romantic person who is in search for his love. As a human being, he also made some mistakes and one of this is to be into a sexually-inclined relationship with a popular guy named Ben. He then wakes up from his senses and decides to cut-off this not-so-healthy kind of relationship. What I love about Charlie is his capability of love and loving other people, he’s such a lovable person which makes us, the readers, root for him more and relate to his experiences. Nick Nelson, on the other hand, is a jock and is into playing rugby. He came off as straight at first, but then he turns out to have feelings for Charlie Spring which I find so cute and adorable.
ART STYLE The book is portrayed by only using black and white colors (excluding the colored special chapters at the end). The design is cute, and pretty clean. It’s easy read and very much fast-paced, you can definitely finish reading this in an hour or 2!
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Heartstopper! It’s fun, quirky, and relatable at some times. I can’t wait to read the future volumes to be released! If I’m not mistaken, the second volume will come out in July 11th! A cliff-hanger was placed at the end, and I can’t wait to find out what future holds between these two adorable characters! I rated this book 5/5 stars on Goodreads but after much thinking, this I would settle for a 4/5 star, still a pretty decent rating! Y’all should read it~
